While the Punjab Government gets bashed very regularly on all forms of media, it somehow is the only Provincial Government in Pakistan that seems to be doing something. But even though there is a ton of good that gets done, somehow the Social and Traditional Media work over time to go after the Punjab Government. Now we can spend time and ask why they do that or we can ask a more important question which is what have all the other provincial governments done in the last 5 years?
What has the Government of Sindh done in the last five years? Mustafa Kamal, MQM’s Former Karachi Mayor, takes the credit for all the development that happened in Karachi. Apart from that, there are hardly any noteworthy projects that have taken place elsewhere within the province. So one is forced to ask, what exactly has the Sindh Government done in the last 5 years? A coalition government of PPP and MQM that misses no chance to throw mud at everyone else be it the PML N, PTI or the Sindhi Nationalists but in fact has not done crap in the last few years. And now that 5 years are nearly done, they have magically thought out a plan to divide Sindh among themselves thereby condemning the people of Sindh to a choice between people you simply cannot disagree with Vs people who genuinely do not give a crap about what you think or say. Add to this the way the provincial government is simply helpless about the violence that keeps erupting in Karachi. Somehow according to our media, people getting killed in Punjab is Punjab Governments fault and when hundreds get killed in mere 2 to 3 days that is somehow NOT Sindh Governments fault or responsibility. Do you see the issue here? Somehow no matter what happens in Karachi, it is no one’s fault but whatever happens in Punjab is somehow linked back to the Government of Punjab. Why can’t we follow the same logic in Sindh, I mean it works for Punjab then why not Sindh?
Then there is the government of KPK. Apart from changing the name from NWFP to KPK what have they done recently? The dams in the territories are being built by USAID, who remind us of this fact through their ongoing media blitz. Governance wise, KPK is a lot less secure than it was 5 years ago. KPK Government and all its Ministers cannot even get out openly in their province. Economy of the region has been going through a serious crisis and the Taliban are regrouping again. And with all this going on KPK Government at least pretends to care and put in an effort. They do try to work with the police and not chicken out of responsibility like the Government of Sindh. But unfortunately on a comparative basis what has been done by the KPK Government in the last 5 years is not significant enough to leave a lasting impact or even improve the immediate situation of the people within that province. The 2009 Swat Operation was not executed by them, they actually waited long enough to make the situation bad enough for the army to be called in for a full fledge operation. But again that is somehow not as bad as the CM Punjab giving out laptops to 100,000 students according to our media.
Now if you thought Sindh and KPK are bad, then you have not heard about the epic governance being doled out in Balochistan. Government of Balochistan is by far the most useless government in existence. Seriously, think about it, what have they done in 5 years? Name 1 thing. No go ahead seriously ask yourself, what has the CM of Balochistan done in the last 5 years relevant to his job? The guy does not even live there; instead he prefers chillaxing in Islamabad at a cozy place called the PRESIDENCY. Come to think of it, why do we even need a government there, we all know who is running the show there then what is the point of having this mockery of the system government that does absolutely nothing but waste public money. I mean come on, there is Punjab Youth Festival in Punjab and the social media goes insane asking why public money is being spent on apparently ‘useless’ activities. So based on exactly that logic, why are we wasting money by having a CM in Balochistan instead of just having Governor Rule which would be clearly saving public money and get rid of a government that has not done anything in the last 5 years. Somehow no one ever talks about this…
Point is Government of Punjab takes a lot of flak from the media over everything they do. But thing is they are doing something and even the World Bank acknowledges that. The issue is not bashing or appreciating Government of Punjab but asking the other three to perform at a minimum of half of Punjab’s level. Because if that does not happen, the already unequal growth pattern in Pakistan will continue and resentment among other provinces would increase which will eventually hurt our nation in the long run.
